It is with great sadness that I report that American actress, Estelle Getty, has died at the age of 84, missing her 85th birthday by just 3 days. Estelle is almost certainly best know for her role as Sophia Petrillo in the wonderful sitcom The Golden Girls. Sophia was the apparently dotty, but secretly shrewd and scheming in a semi-caring way, mother of Dorothy (played by the equally wonderful, Bea Arthur, who was actually older than Getty), and their comedic relationship was a real gem in television history.
I always loved the Golden Girls and have a place in my heart for each of the actresses, and it is innevitable that they will all pass, but still, it is a sad day whenever it happens.
