Nina Hartley was born on 11th March 1959 as Marie Louise Hartman in Berkeley, California, USA. Her parents began studying Zen in 1969 which greatly influenced her as she grew up. Though not a practicing Buddhist now, she still practices its philosophies.
After graduating from Berkeley High School in 1977, she attended San Francisco State University (SFSU), studying nursing, from where she graduated with the highest honours possible.
It was during her second year at SFSU that she began her journey to fame, when she took jobs as a stripper working most notably at the Mitchell Brothers' theatre. While she was stripping she began using the name Nina Hartley. She says she chose this name as Nina was easy for Japanese tourists who saw her show to say, and Hartley after actress Mariette Hartley.
By the age of 25 she had progressed to working in porn. Her first film was Educating Nina, in which she featured in the first two scenes, one a lesbian scene and the other a boy / girl scene.
Since this time she has starred in over 700 titles and directed at least 15, among these were a series of “Guide to...” films, covering subjects from foreplay to bondage, which she both starred in and directed.
Other than her long blond hair, which she has retained for her whole career, she is also known for having “the best ass in the business,” which apparently isn't just for looking at!
Outside of the business, she is known to be bisexual and was previously in a long and stable relationship with her husband Dave and at the same time with Bobby Lee, her “wife,” living in a menage a trois relationship. Now with so many porn stars it is never an easy task to remember their names and at the same time to stick to the basics of being dedicated to any one of them. In doing so we are going to miss out on the new entrants who might be even greater in the body resources and there are no more things I could appreciate.
