Bad Bad Day

It's bad enough that I have to go to work on this weekend when there are events that I could have attended (and I would have booked the time off if I had known about them in time). But working with some of the idiots that I have to really pisses me off sometimes. Today was one of those days.
One of the guards "forgot" to pick up a radio today so, when I had a job for him to do, he was conveniently uncontactable. When he finally turned up he had no idea where I was trying to direct him to, despite the fact that he has been working in that building for about 2 years. In the end I gave up and went and did the job myself, which took 2 minutes. I then had cause to ask him to another job and he only did half of it, again because he didn't know where something was. I got frustrated with him and told him so.
He then started shouting at me, telling me that I was making his life stressful; I was being unfair to him; that he doesn't need to be there as he's spent £40,000 on education and he will be leaving soon to be a lawyer; That I shouldn't treat him like he is stupid; That he could do my job easily, but he isn't out to steal it from me (as if);
I tried once more to explain to him that his main problem is communication, that he doesn't listen fully to instructions, but just hears what he expects to hear. I also pointed out that he should have asked if he didn't understand the instructions that I'd given him. And finally, and for about the 50th time, I told him that he needs to give short, concise answers to questions. For example, I asked if he had opened all the doors (for the second job). His reply went something like:
"Boss, I left here and went up to the 7th floor, as you asked, and I came out of the lifts and opened both sets of doors there that I found."
"So, did you open the doors in the cores?"
"Boss, I went up to the 7th floor and I came out of the lifts and opened the 2 sets of doors that are there. That's what you asked me to do!"
"It wasn't all I asked you to do and so, the simple answer is "NO""

It was a tense atmosphere for the next 10 hours.

About an hour before the end of the shift I got a text from my sister to tell me that she had just read in her local paper that our uncle had died 10 days ago. We are not particularly close with this part of the family, but had reestablished contact just over 2 years ago after no contact at all for almost a decade. My uncle was 75, and was our oldest relative, but it is always a shock when you hear these things. On top of that, because we hadn't been told about it, I am not sure what would be expected of us in the way of condolences or attendance. I don't have any contact numbers for them, in fact Facebook is the only way I have of contacting them and I don't think that is a great environment for enquiries and condolences. So, I'm not sure what I should be doing.
For the last hour of work I think I was in a sort of shock and despite not being close to him I still had a little weep when I got home.
Goodbye Uncle Peter

I am now sat at home, all alone, watching the Eurovision Song Contest, wishing I had someone to snuggle up to on the sofa and take the piss out of each entry while gorging myself on junk food and snacks. I'll just have to do that all alone, just for a change.

Wasted Time and Money

I went into town this evening because I needed to get out and Tim had said that there was a possibility that he may be available for a drink. I wasn't 100% in the mood for it, as I had almost fallen asleep at my laptop this afternoon, but I dolled myself up anyway.
I got into Soho and send Tim a text to ask if he was available. He phoned back to say he had sent me a text earlier saying that he wouldn't be out because he has to go to Cardiff in the morning for work. For some reason the text had not gone through. I wasn't really expecting him to be free anyway as he has been so busy at work lately.
I had one drink in Comptons and then moved on to Rupert Street. While I was getting a drink at the second bar I saw that Gareth was there. I was going to try and avoid him because I didn't want to be branded boring by him again (even if it is true!), but he called to me and so I stood and chatted with him for a few minutes before he had to go on to Village for a friend's birthday party. He said he might be back, but I was really not in the mood for staying out alone, waiting for someone to possibly turn up, so I finished my drink and headed home.
Almost as soon as I got in Gareth sent me a text to say he was back in Rupert Street. I sent one back explaining where I was.
Not in a great mood now, and apparently we will be sharing the flat with Jesse's brother for the next couple of days too (he is over from Japan [I think]). I've got one more day off of work and all I have planned for that is (can you guess?) going to the gym. My life is so predictable. The next social event I have to look forward to is Richard's birthday on 3rd July. That says it all really considering my birthday is on 21st June!

Barbican Cruising

I've just had a quick wander around the Barbican to test out my new digital camera, much like I did with the one that I bought last year. Last year's one was crap (you had to select the type of picture before each snap, they all came out blurred and you couldn't see the viewscreen in daylight!). This one is much better, it automatically selects the right settings, if it needs a flash and the view screen is great.
I also noticed, once again while I was walking around, what a fabulous place the Barbican highwalks are for cruising. I am so surprised that it isn't a top shagging spot as there are so many nooks and crannies, and at night it is fairly deserted. It would spoil the wonderful location though, and squealing queens (as you would be bound to get) would certainly attract complaints and police attention. But, if anyone nice out there wants to help me explore the area at night get in touch!
First off we have a view, from one of the highwalks, of my room (on the corner above the Shakespeare pub). If I am at home and bored I can often be seen in the window looking out at the passing talent. If you are passing give me a wave.
Next we have a high view of the Lakeside Terrace which, during the hot weather gets packed. It is always nice to sit by the water and watch the Mallards, coots, heron, a variety of water insects and ornamental fish (as well as the occasional topless talent).
Wide-open pavements with greenery all around. Under each of the blocks of apartments there are hidden-away areas where fun should be had.
There are also small fountains dotted around the complex, along with some art installations.
This is a favourite sunbathing spot as it gets a lot of walking traffic going past, and it is about 100m from my home.
And lastly, and certainly least, this is a view of the back of the building in which I work, taken from one of the highwalks. The one I work in is the lower, greenish-glass building, not the beautiful clean stepped one on the right.

Treats

I've just got back from a shopping trip and I spent about £300 treating myself. I bought myself some clothes (shorts, t-shirts, underwear, socks and accessories), some reference comic books and a new digital camera. It is still sunny, so I got some sun while I was out and I am off to the gym later. All adding up for an okay day, oh and Tim might be out for drinks tomorrow night, emphasis on the "might" as he is really busy at work (final touches on the last few episodes of Dr Who).
I'll try out my new camera either later today or tomorrow, and I still need some more clothes (lightweight summer shirts, trousers, sandals), though I'll think I'll leave that until next week (i.e. after Friday's wages).

Good Day

Despite only having 2 hours sleep this morning, which is catching up to me rapidly, I've not had a bad day today. I was really fed up with the drilling and hammering from upstairs and had to get out of the flat.
I popped my dry cleaning in on the way to Jessops to go and buy a new digital camera (if you remember the one I bought last year wasn't very good). I saw 2 that I thought would be good, which were both the same price, but there was no one free to help me, so I left. I'll go back tomorrow, or to the one in New Oxford Street as I am intending to treat myself to some clothes too this week in preparation for more great weather.

I went to the gym at about 14:30 and tried out the first part of my new workout regime. I had forgotten nearly all that Nick had shown me last week, I must have been in more of a daze that I thought. But luckily he was there and didn't mind showing me again. I was working on my chest and arms today and my arms were really feeling it, but it was my hands that felt the worst. They were cramping up towards the end.
There was a really camp guy, in his 50's, using one of the walking machines and every five minutes or so he would make a sound that I can only describe as a sex noise, really loudly. I found it really creepy and hilarious at the same time, as did Nick and his colleague (who I was introduced to but have forgotten the name of, but is almost certainly gay too and has a great body). Despite having a good work out I did miss out some dumbbell work as the freeweight area was quite busy and I am very self-conscious when I work out (I can't compare with those big guys and don't feel confident in what I am doing, whereas they are all old hats at it all). I made sure I had a run at the start of my time there and the end.

After the gym I went home to drop my kit off and while I was feeling brave enough I logged on to Facebook and sent a friend request" to Nick, something I've been putting off because I wasn't sure if he was a friend or just being nice because of his job. I was pleasantly surprised that he accepted it a couple of hours later.

Then I went and sat out in the sunshine for about an hour and was cruised by a fairly muscular and good-looking guy. I thought he was a resident (I was sunbathing in the middle of the Barbican complex), but when he eventually came over to talk to me it turns out he was a visitor looking for a toilet. I suppose I could have made more of an effort and taken him somewhere (home?) for sex, but I wasn't feeling horny. The attention alone was enough for me today (I hadn't even gone into the steam room or sauna at all today after the gym, but that may have something to do with the heat and the "sex noise" guy hanging around too!).

So I am feeling good about my body, and have been for about a week now, constantly walking around at home with my top off admiring my developing chest and the nascent abdominal muscles. My tan is beginning to show, after 2 tanning sessions, along with 3 hours out in the sun over the last three days. I am obviously looking good enough to be chatted up, which is always a nice feeling (well, it is when they are attractive too!). And I have enough money to be able to treat myself to some nice new clothes.
Oh, and my neck pain is almost entirely gone (lets hope that it stays gone in the morning too, which is when it is normally at its worst).

Whereforeart Thou Sleep?

I am on my first day off of four having finished my night shift at 07:00 this morning. I got to sleep immediately my head hit the pillow this morning. Good job really as I was woken just over 2 hours later by drilling in the flat upstairs. AGAIN!
I kept trying to get back to sleep when I thought that the drilling had stopped and each time, just as I was dropping off to sleep, the drilling would start again. About an hour ago I gave up trying when a second drill started going at the same time. I am going to be so knackered later.

I want to go to the gym today, but there are several factors that are putting me off:
  1. My neck is still hurting a little bit, which is worrying as it started hurting 5 days ago, it should be better by now, but each morning when I wake it is worse than when I went to sleep. Must be how I am sleeping.
  2. It is a really lovely morning outside, too hot to exercise in my opinion, especially as the gym never seems to have any air conditioning on and gets too warm for me at the best of times.
  3. Embarrassingly, I have been thinking all weekend about Nick, who works at the gym. Despite me constantly saying that he is far too young for me, I really like the guy. I don't think we have anything in common (from the little that I do know about the guy). I think it is that, outside of work and home, he is the only person I have had a conversation with in probably 2-3 weeks. How ridiculous is that?
  4. I am also embarrassed that I won't be able to remember what I am meant to be doing on each of the new exercises he drew up for me last week.

I will end up going to the gym, as I am liking the way my body is looking (and feeling) now. I just hope that the experience isn't too awful. Let's hope that I don't fall asleep on the treadmill!

How Sue "C's" It

Last night, while I was at work, I read an interview in this months Attitude magazine with Jane Lynch, the wonderfully wicked Sue Sylvester from Glee. In it she opines on the current level of acceptance of gays in "polite" society, and she makes a lot of sense:

"It's almost like we're going back to the time when we had to decide whether to abolish slavery. "Do we get rid of the gays, or do we accept them and weave them into the fabric of our society?" Our history tells us we ultimately weave everyone in the fabric of society, though, so I think it's just a matter of time."

It's an amazingly astute observation that I had never considered before.

Being a member of a "minority" can makes you focus on all the negative points, and to achieve equality someone has to be focused on these things. Looking at the big picture though, every minority who do not harm others by their actions eventually get accepted into the majority, while retaining their individual differences. It just takes time.

If you take a look at moments in history, such as the Nazi's attempted extermination of non-Aryan people (Jewish, gay, black, Romany etc), it ultimately didn't work, and resulted in these groups eventually becoming stronger, having more sympathy than before and becoming more visible. The same goes for the attempted genocides in Eastern Europe. Yes, it may have cost many hundreds of thousands of lives, but in the end it was those minority groups that had the last laugh, as aggressions against them proved to be the strengthening that they and the world as a whole needed to enable them to become more unified.

Contrary to how that last section may sound I am not condoning attempted genocide as an acceptable tactic for strengthening society, quite the contrary. The lesson to be learned is that wiping out a section of society that you do not like will not work. The best way forward is to find a way, however abhorrent you may find it at the present time, to accept everyone into society in some way because they are going to be there, in one form or another, no matter what actions you take.

More Noise

I am hoping that the road drilling, that I have just heard starting outside my window, does not continue tomorrow. I will have enough to deal with, what with the drilling and hammering by the neighbours and my sore neck.
I really need something great to happen in my life. Everything seems to be a pile of crap at the moment.

Pain in the Neck

My neck pain is worse than ever this morning. It's so bad that I am surprised that I got any sleep at all last night. I was awake early and typically, because I was already awake, there was no drilling or hammering from my neighbours this morning! I bet there will be tomorrow when I need my sleep after a night shift.
I am considering not going to work, because of my neck, but I really can't afford to lose money and it won't make my neck any better by staying at home (or any worse by going to work). I guess I am just looking for an excuse not to go back to that bloody place.
I won't be going to the gym today either, which is really pissing me off as I wanted to try my new workout regime and get a tanning session. I also haven't been able to stop thinking about Nick, though that is probably because I haven't spoken to anyone else (outside of work or the flat) for a couple of weeks (how fucking sad is that?).
