Bug-chasers and Gift-Givers

I have just read this story on the BBC News web site and find it very hard to believe that people would actually WANT to become infected with HIV.
I understand that some people, myself sometimes included, will engage in unprotected sex and accept that infection may occur, just as drug users accept that they may have side-effects from their usage. But to actively seek out an HIV person to infect you is something else entirely.
I suppose it could be a symptom of the sometimes superior attitude that some gay men have in recounting the number of friends they have lost to the virus, and the romanticising of the start of the "AIDS era". Some men may feel that they truly do not "belong" to the gay scene until they know someone, or are themselves, infected with HIV. Just speculation on my part, but there has to be some reason for it.
If it is true, then how long will it be before Gaydar has its own chatroom devoted to the subject (if it doesn't already).
All I can say is, choosing to infect yourself is better than choosing to infect someone else, which some people do, maybe as a way of "easing their pain" or "evening the score," or just through sheer malice.
If you do not want to be infected than you have to take personal responsibility for yourself. Do not trust someones word if they say they aren't infected, anyone can lie even your "loved-ones!"
YOU are responsible for YOU at the end of the day.
