For the first time in years I watched some of Children In Need last night. I don't normally watch as I hate seeing these wealthy celebrities, whose salaries are individually more each than the totals raised by the entire show (OK maybe not all of the celebs, but a lot of them), I just find it all a bit hypocritical. I also find a lot of the program cringe-worthy or just plain boring. Tonight, almost changed my mind as I found 4 sections quite enjoyable:
Firstly, and probably most importantly, the Dr Who story. I thought it was brilliant how they wound it into the continuity of the series by slotting it in between the end of the last episode of the last season and just before the beginning of the Christmas special. Very clever. The best bit for me though, and a nice tribute to the everlasting appeal of Dr Who, was when David Tannant's Doctor was saying goodbye to Peter Davidson's Doctor by saying "You were my Doctor." I found that strangely touching, and having a double meaning. Firstly, that David Tennant's Doctor liked being Peter Davidson's Doctor because he was the first youthful regeneration he had had. It was also meant to show that David Tennant had grown up watching Dr Who while Peter Davidson was the Doctor. A nice tribbute I thought.
Oh, and the brief explanation of why, when the Doctor meets his past regenerations, they look older than they should do was also very clever.
Secondly, I love the appearance of Kylie on the show, looking her usual fantastic self, and obviously loved by the entire audience. A tribute to her and all those like her who have fought against cancer. An example of bravery to everyone.
Thirdly, I enjoyed the dancing from the professionals from Strictly Come Dancing, but then I do like a good dance show.
And, speaking of dancing, fourthly (is that a word?) the Dirty Dancing piece was good, though I mainly enjoyed it because I was drooling over the dancer playing Johnny Castle, who I have since found out is named Josef Brown and is an Australian dancer, singer, & actor. I just couldn't get over the size of his biceps, though I couldn't find a picture of him to suitably show this!
QI on BBC2 was also entertaining as always.
