I was back at work today and dreading it as usual. It didn't help that one of my flatmates was hogging the shower this morning for 20 minutes, almost making me late, when he knows that I leave the flat before he does!
About half an hour into my shift I was called by the contract manager to say that the acting site manager (who nobody likes) is off sick today. This was on top of being told that he had received a "bollocking" yesterday from the contract manager for exerting his authority when he actually has none yet (as he still hasn't been given the job officially). So, I was asked to fill in for him today and they tried to get someone in on overtime to act as supervisor. They didn't manage to get anyone and we didn't really need anyone either!
Later, I was asked by the contract manager if I could work day shifts ALL of next week (on top of working over the weekend). The acting manager is due to come back in on Monday, but, as the contract manager has said he will let me know what I will be doing when he speaks to me on Monday afternoon, it seems obvious that the acting manager may be told to take a hike, at least for a while.
I doubt that I will be "given" the job permanently, and I'm not sure I would want it anyway, but, what with all the complaints flying around about this temporary guy, I may just get to fill in for a while.
It isn't as good as it sounds though. I won't be earning any extra money (other than the extra hours that I am working) as he is on less per hour than I am. But I have said that if it goes on for more than a week I will want a higher hourly rate. I will only be working 11 hours per day though, which is something. I also get next weekend off and I get out of having to work my next set of nights too (which is the best thing of all!)! All in all, it seems a win/win situation for me! Let's just hope that I am not counting my chickens too early!
