I had quite a boring day at work today, but I was hoping that the night shift would be in early as I wasn't sure what time tonight's episode of Dr Who was due to start and I wanted to get home quickly just in case there was a chance of me catching it all. I got out of work at about 18:50 and as I only live 5 minutes away, I was in and had the television switched on by 19:00. It had already started so I took my coat off and sat down to watch it.
It was a good episode, going back to traditional Dr Who stories set around historical events. This one was set, surprise surprise in Pompei and what are the chances of it being the day before THE eruption? Pretty good I would say, knowing the Doctor!
Phil Cornwall was pretty crap as a market stall holder, playing it as Del-Boy from Only Fools & Horses, but apart from that, it was a great story, with lavish sets and great action sequences. And just wait until you see the weapon the Doctor uses to fight off one of the baddies, it's brilliant. I think you can guess how the story ends up (being Pompei, please try and keep up!) but it is a great journey on the way, and the eruption of Vesuvius is great.
There are tears along the way along with a great performance from Catherine Tate. (I never though I would be saying that about her appearances in Dr Who!), though she still sounds too much like one of her characters when she gets obstinate or angry. Otherwise she is the perfect antidote to the previous girlies, strong characters though they were (are).
