National Service?

There are lots of calls at the moment to reintroduce National Service to "punish" the scum who are committing these crimes in London and around the country at the moment. These calls go out every time "disaffected youth" act in an animalistic fashion like this. I think it is the right sort of idea, but the wrong place for them, or at least it needs to be updated.
I know there are honorable military personnel who should not have to deal with these kind of scum, bringing down the respectability of all military services. I don't know if I would feel safe with these people protecting our nation. It would certainly change my opinion of the military for the worse.
My idea is that, once a child leaves education, if they do not enter military service or gain a permanent position in full-time employment then they should be made to enter the new scheme. The scheme should train them, male and female, in physical education, military-style discipline, the three R's, job skills and pay them their "unemployment benefit" for the privilege. This "force" should be employed for a couple of hours each day to do community work, gaining further skills and giving them something significant to put on their c.v.'s to enhance their future employment prospects. In addition, should a significant event take place, such as a natural disaster, major accident or terrorist act, then they could be employed in stewarding (directing / moving people) and in the clean up.
No one should be paid benefits for doing nothing. In my opinion even mothers should be made to do some community work, while giving them some free child care. It gives them a break, gives them something different to do, gives them a break and can introduce them to new people, experiences and skills.

Couldn't agree more. Days of something for nothing should be over. Country's hard up & I am sick my taxes being wasted. Benefits for those who really deserve. If the school leavers want the dole then they should do as you suggest. Do an gov e- petition?

An e-petition sounds like a good idea, but I'm not sure how to go about that. Will have a look into it.
