My Comic Book Hero Groups.

Alpha Flight

I first heard of Alpha Flight when reading a letters page in an issue of Marvel Two-In-One, one of my favourite old comics. It mentioned all these characters that I had never heard of, and wanted to know more about. I eventually managed to get hold of an issue with Sasquatch in and was even more intrigued. When the Alpha Flight series was launched I was hooked. John Byrne's artwork was one of the main reasons, but also the stories and the diversity of characters and the fact that the group most often worked separately. Even when Byrne stopped and the artwork deteriorated, in my opinion, I still loved the series for its diversity. I was also intruiged by the histories of some of the members in particular, notably Northstar ( I had my suspisions about him long before he was "allowed" to come out).

Sasquatch was another of my fave characters in the series and I was upset when he was killed off (though he was brought back pretty quickly), Nemesis was an interesting and underused character with a mysterious past, and the Inuit Gods also interested me because of my long-standing interest in mythology, Snowbird was interesting because of her transformation abilities (another interest of mine being natural history), Puck represented disabilities, which weren't represented much at the time (as was Roger Bochs), and Marrina was a great innocent hero.

The second and third series' of Alpha Flight have been disappointments, as was the Northstar limited series. Bring back the old style and old format and it will surely last more than 2 years this time, thats what I say.
